**SMO 254 Fasteners** are constructed of a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel with a composition of about 20% chromium, 18% nickel, 6% molybdenum, and include additions of nitrogen and copper. The special chemical composition provides them with superior resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, as well as chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking. SMO 254 has a very high Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) of more than 42.5, much higher than standard stainless steels such as 316L. Due to their superior tensile strength (about 650 MPa), great ductility, and weldability, these fasteners do not suffer from their mechanical strength under harsh conditions of temperature and corrosive environments.
